Dua for Breaking Fast
Fasting during Ramadan and other times of the year is a spiritual act of worship that holds immense significance in Islam. It is not just about abstaining from food and drink, but also a means of cleansing the soul and strengthening one’s relationship with Allah. Upon completing the fast, there is a specific dua for breaking fast that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to recite. Let's explore the authentic dua, its meaning, and the significance of supplications during this blessed moment.
Authentic Dua for Breaking Fast
The dua that is recited after breaking one's fast is as follows:
Arabic:
ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ، وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ، وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Transliteration:
Dhahaba az-zama’, wabtallati l-‘urooq, wa thabata l-ajru in sha Allah.
Translation:
The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills
Abu Dawud 2/306
The Dua That Is Considered Weak (Da'if)
Another dua that is often circulated is:
Arabic:
اللّهُمَّ إِنِّي لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ وَعَلَىٰ رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ
Transliteration:
Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika aamantu wa 'ala rizqika-aftartu
Translation:
O Allah, for You have I fasted, and by Your provision, I have broken my fast.
This dua is widely quoted but has been classified as weak (da'if) in terms of authenticity. The hadith narrating this dua is found in Sunan Abu Dawud 2358 but is considered weak by scholars like Al-Albani who classified it Da'if in Abi Dawud (510). It is important to be mindful of the authenticity of the duas we recite, especially in moments of great spiritual significance like breaking the fast.
The Supplication of a Fasting Person is Never Rejected
One of the greatest blessings of fasting is the promise that the dua of a fasting person, especially at the time of breaking the fast, is not rejected by Allah. This profound encouragement comes from a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“There are three whose supplication is not rejected: The fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just leader, and the supplication of the oppressed person; Allah raises it above the clouds and opens the gates of heaven to it.”
This highlights the immense opportunity fasting presents for turning to Allah in prayer, asking for His mercy, guidance, and forgiveness, knowing that Allah is most generous in accepting the duas made at this time.
May Allah accept our fasts, our prayers, and all our good deeds.
