Laylatul Qadr: The Night of Power

Laylatul Qadr: The Night of Power

Laylatul Qadr, also known as the Night of Power, is one of the most sacred nights in Islam. It is a night of immense blessings, mercy, and divine decrees, marking the revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Muslims around the world eagerly seek this night during the last ten days of Ramadan, recognising its unparalleled significance in earning Allah’s pleasure and forgiveness. We’ll explore the meaning and significance of Laylatul Qadr, the recommended duas to say, and what to do on this blessed night.

What Is Laylatul Qadr?

The name "Laylatul Qadr" translates to "The Night of Power" or "The Night of Decree." It is mentioned in the Quran as a night when the destiny of every creation is decreed for the year ahead.

Allah describes it in Surah Al-Qadr:

"Indeed, We sent it [the Quran] down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit [Jibreel] descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn."

—Surah Al-Qadr (97:1-5)

Laylatul Qadr falls within the last ten nights of Ramadan, specifically on one of the odd-numbered nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th). While the exact date is not specified, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged Muslims to seek it, particularly on the 27th night.

The Significance of Laylatul Qadr

  1. Revelation of the Quran

Laylatul Qadr marks the night when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through Angel Jibreel. This monumental event changed the course of human history and provided a complete guide for humanity.

Worship performed on Laylatul Qadr is more rewarding than worship performed over 83 years and 4 months. This immense reward makes it a priceless opportunity for Muslims to earn blessings.

  3. Decrees Are Made

On this night, Allah ordains the decrees for His creation for the coming year, including matters of life, death, sustenance, and health. The descent of angels, including Angel Jibreel, fills the earth with peace and blessings.

  4. Forgiveness of Sins

    The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"Whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven"

    (Bukhari)
