Dua for Iftar
Breaking your fast is a moment of gratitude and reflection. Whether you are fasting in the holy month of Ramadan or observing a voluntary fast on other days, the dua for iftar remains the same. This simple yet profound supplication expresses gratitude for Allah’s provision and hope for His reward.
The Authentic Dua for Breaking Your Fast
The dua that has been authentically narrated in the Sunnah is as follows:
Arabic:
ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ، وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ، وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Transliteration:
Dhahaba az-zama’, wabtallati l-‘urooq, wa thabata l-ajru in sha Allah.
Translation:
“The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills.”
This beautiful dua captures the physical relief of breaking the fast while reminding us of the spiritual rewards that Allah promises to those who fast with sincerity. Save this image on your phone, so you don't need to keep coming back!
Addressing the Weak Dua
There is another dua that is often circulated as a supplication for iftar, which is:
Arabic:
اللّهُمَّ إِنِّي لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ وَعَلَىٰ رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ
Transliteration:
Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika aamantu wa 'ala rizqika-aftartu
Translation:
“O Allah, for You have I fasted, and by Your provision, I have broken my fast.”
While this dua is widely quoted, it has been classified as weak (da'if) in terms of authenticity. Scholars, including Al-Albani, have reviewed the hadith narrating this dua and determined it to be unreliable (Da'if Abi Dawud 510). As such, Muslims are encouraged to prioritise the authentic supplication mentioned earlier, especially during spiritually significant moments like breaking the fast.
The Spiritual Gem of Iftar
Ramadan offers a unique opportunity to pause at the time of iftar and engage in heartfelt supplication.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There are three whose supplication is not rejected: The fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just leader, and the supplication of the oppressed person; Allah raises it above the clouds and opens the gates of heaven to it.”
